Wellwood will bust his slump

Kyle Wellwood has gone from one of the more exciting players to watch to the absolute toughest player to find out there.

So it pains me as a man of extra girth to see one of my own turn his back on his fellow fatties only to join the ranks of the (what's the word for it again? Oh right) healthy. Unfortunately the end result is thin on goals.

If you ask GM Mike Gillis he'll tell you that Wellwood's toe, which he broke blocking a shot last month, has hampered his skating ability. It's only now that we're seeing Wellwood at full speed.

I suppose we shouldn't forget the first few weeks of the season when Wellwood battled a pretty bad flu.

While we're at it, the team's injuries have basically forced the coach to surround Wellwood with a litany of Moose wingers who have all the scoring finish of Deborah Winger.

So it seems all the excuses are neatly in place here and with the cavalry on its way (Daniel Sedin) there should be more talent to spread around the lineup. It appears the stars have finally aligned for Mr. Wellwood.

Anyone buying this? Call me crazy, but there is some truth to the aforementioned scenario. That said, there will be absolutely zero excuses for Wellwood starting Friday night as the Canucks start a five-game home stand against Western Conference opponents.

Prediction: Wellwood will bust the slump like it's the zipper on his 2008 jeans.
