O'Brien realistic on ice time

The most outspoken Canuck might soon have more material to sound off on.

Barring injuries, Shane O'Brien will most likely find his ice time drop this season and could even find himself scratched due to the crowded Canucks' backend.

The vocal defenceman went on a post-practice rant last February about the lack of playing time, saying, "I want to play, I want to improve as a player, I want to stay in the league as long as I can. You can't do that from the press box."

But with 10 days until training camp, the 26-year-old blueliner, who signed a new one-year, $1.6-million contract this summer, is not as concerned about his place on the team's depth chart, yet.

"Whatever [Mike Gillis] and the coaches see my role on this team, I'll take it from there," he said Tuesday at UBC. "I'm just going to let my play speak for itself. Obviously you work hard in the offseason and you want to play, you don't want to sit in the press box, it's no fun."

Meanwhile, after spending last season between Anaheim and Vancouver, defenceman Nathan McIver, 24, was re-signed by the Canucks yesterday.
