Struggling netminder Curtis Sanford has been put on waivers by the Vancouver Canucks, CKNW reported Wednesday.

The move signals the possibility that No. 1 puckstopper Roberto Luongo is ready to return to action against the Phoenix Coyotes on Thursday night in Vancouver.

Bobby Lu's new backup will likely be Jason LaBarbera, who has shown his ability to be a steady backup since he was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in a trade on Dec. 30.

In 19 games and 15 starts this season, Sanford went 7-8-0 with a 2.62 goals-against average and a .906 save percentage.

If the "Sandman" clears waivers, he will be sent to the Manitoba Moose of the AHL where he would be expected to share goaltending duties with perennial prospect Cory Schneider, who also saw brief action in Vancouver earlier this season.
