He isn't exactly a sound bite waiting to happen, but there is something new, improved and quite refreshing when it comes to Roberto Luongo and how he has viewed the inquiring minds this season.
A media-relations type once told me that Pat Quinn didn't view the media as a necessary evil, but rather, an unnecessary one. I wouldn't say Luongo subscribed to that school of thought, but he wasn't far removed.
Luongo really didn't know what he was getting into when he came to Vancouver, from a media standpoint at least. The scrutiny didn't overwhelm him, but it didn't please him particularly either.
He understood getting "scrummed" after games, but dealing with the same questions after the next morning's practice became a little irksome. This is understandable, but something that goes with the territory in a Canadian-based franchise.
Long before Luongo was given the "C" during training camp, he had a little chat with a former captain in these parts. You may remember Trevor Linden. Luongo certainly did, and sought his counsel over the summer, on that nettlesome issue known as the media.
After two years here, Luongo was starting to get the sense the inquisitors weren't going anywhere.
How best to handle it?
Linden's message was pretty blunt: "If you resist, they will persist." Translation: The media wasn't going away, win, lose or draw. So deal with it, and deal with it in such a way that it doesn't distract you, or piss you off.
Easier said than done, but so far so good for Luongo. He seems more energized when he answers the questions, over and over and over again. Even when he wasn't at his Luongo-esque best in October, he wasn't prickly when discussing it. With three straight shutouts heading into last night's game against Colorado, his disposition lately has been understandably sunny. The good news is that he seems to have perspective about it all.
Interesting when you think about it. Trevor Linden played his last game back in April, but came up with a huge assist over the summer. And Roberto Luongo doesn't mind talking about it.
