Vancouver Canucks prospects took to the ice at 8 Rinks in Burnaby yesterday to shake off some summer rust and make a good impression on coaches, well in advance of training camp. 24 hours Vancouver caught up with four prospects at the rink and heard their view on things.

PRAB RAI

Right wing

Picked: 5th round, 131st overall in 2008 entry draft

Age: 18 Height: 6' Weight: 191

Last year's team: Seattle Thunderbirds, WHL

Prab Rai made waves in his Surrey hometown when the Canucks picked the left winger in the fifth round last weekend. The 18-year-old Rai, who demonstrated his skills with the WHL's Seattle Thunderbirds, said now's a good time to give back to his community and encourage other Indo-Canadians to hit the ice.

"It shows that we can do it too and I hope a lot of kids follow my footsteps and I encourage them to keep going," Rai said.

MICHAEL GRABNER

Right wing

Picked: 1st round, 14th overall in 2006 entry draft

Age: 20 Height: 6' Weight: 170

Last year's team: Manitoba Moose, AHL

Austrian Michael Grabner continues to pack on muscle as he prepares to make the jump from the Moose to the Canucks. But life away from hockey may be more of a challenge than bulking up.

"I think the tougher part of the pro game is you don't have anyone who looks after you outside of the rink," Grabner said. "You have your bills, you got to look after yourself and your nutrition. It's a lot different than juniors when someone takes you in."

COREY SCHNEIDER

Goalie

Picked: 1st round, 26th overall in 2004 entry draft

Age: 22 Height: 6'2 Weight: 195

Last year's team: Manitoba Moose, AHL

Canucks goaltending prospect Cory Schneider said plenty of ice time would help his development more than a spot on the bench behind Roberto Luongo on the big club's bench.

"It'd be pretty hard to jump straight from the [minors] to a pretty large role with the Canucks," he said. "If I play well enough, getting 40 or 50 games in Manitoba, and kind of bearing the load, I think that would be good."

PATRICK WHITE

Centre

Picked: 1st round, 25th overall in 2007

Age: 19 Height: 6'1 Weight: 186

Last year's team: University of Minnesota Golden Gophers

2007 first-round pick Patrick White understands the pressures of playing in a hockey-mad city like Vancouver and the 19-year-old is up for the challenge.

"They kind of warned me a little bit about us young guys being around," he said with a smile.

"I'm from Minnesota and the people from Minnesota love hockey so I can't think of a better place to play where people love hockey."
