It's the Luc of the draw

With a name like Luc, you're bound to be nicknamed "Lucky."

But Luc Bourdon's second stint in a Vancouver Canucks uniform began because of Kevin Bieksa and Sami Salo's bad luck. The 20-year-old defenseman arrived at Manitoba Moose practice Friday morning to learn he was going west because two of the Canucks' top defencemen needed surgery after freak Thursday night injuries.

Bourdon played nine games with Vancouver last fall before he was returned to the Moncton Wildcats of the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League. This time, he'll get more games and time to show Canucks' head coach Alain Vigneault just how much difference a year makes.

"Sometimes less is more, you go out there and sometimes try to do too much," Bourdon said. "Sometimes when you just keep it simple, you look better and play better."

Bourdon was drafted in the first round, 10th overall, in 2005 and was among the last pre-season cuts. He returned to Vancouver to lead the blueline of Brent Sutter's gold medal-winning squad in the 2006 IIHF World Hockey Championship and ended the spring of 2006 on the losing end of the Memorial Cup.

After last season's stints with Moncton and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles, the Canucks assigned Bourdon to the Moose for the Calder Cup playoffs. The Canucks' deep defensive corps meant Bourdon would have to bide his time in Manitoba, where the six-foot-three, 211-pounder began this season with three goals and five assists under head coach Scott Arniel.

"A good start of the season down there has my confidence a little higher," said Bourdon, who played 13:57 in his 2007-2008 Canuck debut in Saturday's 4-3 win over the Colorado Avalanche.

Vigneault said Bourdon is going to benefit from being more relaxed, on and off the ice.

"Before when you asked him a question a lot of time it was a one-word answer, he was seizing up there," Vigneault said. "He looks a little calmer, relaxed. He's giving me sentences when he answers my questions now."
