Rick Bowness and Mike Kelly were hired to assist Vancouver Canucks' head coach Alain Vigneault yesterday.

Bowness, a seven-year NHL player, was one of Wayne Gretzky's assistant coaches with the Phoenix Coyotes last season.

He is a former head coach of the Winnipeg Jets, Boston Bruins, Ottawa Senators, New York Islanders and Coyotes.

Kelly, Vigneault's Manitoba Moose assistant, joins returning assistant Barry Smith, the lone holdover from the Marc Crawford era. Crawford's assistants Mike Johnston and Jack McIlhargey were fired the same week Vigneault was hired in June.

"It's all about team coaching right now and these three guys are all very competent," Vigneault said. "I'm sure we're going to work really well together." Vigneault said the Canucks have holes to fill on defense and right wing.
