Don't count Bryan McCabe among the various bashers of Big Bert.

With Team Canada officials receiving some heat over the selection of Todd Bertuzzi, McCabe finds nothing wrong with the pick.

"I consider him to be one of the top five forwards in the league," McCabe said of Bertuzzi, his teammate with both the New York Islanders and Vancouver Canucks.

"The past is the past. He deserves to be on the team, and he is."

Leafs defenceman Alexander Khavanov, who had a shaky game last night against the Boston Bruins, was not picked for the Russian team.

"You would have expected them to communicate more," Khavanov said. "The first call I even got from them came about 10 days ago saying 'You might be on the list.' "

Asked if he was disappointed, Khavanov said: "No. There are people responsible for those decisions, and you hope they make the right ones."

GOING, GOING, GONE

There are times when Glen Murray still can't believe it.

"Shocking," Murray said of the trade that sent captain Joe Thornton to the San Jose Sharks in exchange for forwards Marco Sturm and Wayne Primeau and defenceman Brad Stuart.

"Obviously any time you lose your best player and captain, it's an adjustment."

The Bruins have recorded nine points in the eight games since the blockbuster deal.

Murray still speaks regularly by phone with Thornton, his buddy and former linemate.

"We talk quite a bit," Murray said. "I still have a home in California so we chat about various things.

"He said he is going to buy a surfboard. I told him 'It ain't that easy.'

"He's playing great out there."

Each of the three players who came to Boston in the trade had a point in Boston's 4-1 win last night, but it has been a bit of an adjustment for them. There remains a tinge of bitterness in Boston regarding the trade.

Said Stuart: "I've had people come up to me on the street asking 'Why did they deal Joe? How could they do that?'

"But at the same time, they have been pretty polite, welcoming me to town."
