TORONTO - Brian Burke was shooting straight when he said there were no big deals brewing for the Leafs, but he managed to put together a smaller one as deadline approached.
The Leafs dealt blue line prospect Keith Aulie to the Tampa Bay Lightning in return for forward Carter Ashton, a former second-round pick who has yet to suit up in the NHL.
Aulie, who came to the Leafs in the trade that brought captain Dion Phaneuf here from the Calgary Flames, has had an up and down tenure with the team.
After struggling in training camp, the Rouleau, Sask., native started the season with the AHL Toronto Marlies. He was recalled on a couple of occasions and dressed for 17 games with the Leafs.
Ashton, meanwhile, is a 20-year-old Winnipeg native who was selected 29th overall by the Bolts in 2009. In 59 games with the AHL's Norfold Admirals, Ashton has shown an offensive upside counting 19 goals and 16 assists.
