NAPLES, FLA. -- The latest from the hallways of the Ritz Carlton Golf Resort as the NHL's 30 GMs gather:

- The Sharks have stepped up their bid for Thrashers RW Marian Hossa. While the Habs are considered the frontrunners to land Hossa, it's believed Sharks GM Doug Wilson has made a pitch that includes either C Patrick Marleau or RW Jonathan Cheechoo, along with a prospect and a pick. Bruins GM Peter Chiarelli is also making a big push for Hossa, and there's talk RW Glen Murray is part of a package. The Senators are players as well.

- The Habs have also been linked to Maple Leafs C Mats Sundin, but sources say they're a bigger player for Hossa or Flames LW Alex Tanguay. Montreal GM Bob Gainey said he's willing to make a one-for-one deal if he can get an "impact" player in return. The Sharks, Ducks and Wings have all made a pitch for Sundin.

- Columbus D Ron Hainsey is a hot commodity. While the Blue Jackets would like to re-sign Hainsey, he is set to become an unrestricted free agent in the summer and could be lost for nothing. Columbus GM Scott Howson also has to decide whether he wants to make a push for the playoffs, or be a seller. The Sharks, Stars, Canucks, Senators and Rangers are all looking for blue-line help.

- There's a belief the Isles have held talks with the Leafs to bring back D Bryan McCabe, who would have to waive his no-trade clause.

CLARIFICATION

It was reported in this space yesterday that Buffalo D Brian Campbell was going to get a long-term contract from the Sabres. It should have read Campbell was going to get a long-term contract offer from the Sabres. That offer is expected to be made this week.
