TORONTO - About three weeks ago, an email arrived from a well-connected insider asking a rather simple question.
“What have you heard about Tim Leiweke?”
The answer I provided at the time: Not much. So I made a few phone calls. And the insider made a few phone calls. And then an industry friend called up and asked independently: “What are you hearing on Leiweke?”
The guessing game of broken telephone had begun. There was all kinds of whispering out there in corporate sports land, including among those working for Leiweke — just nothing definitive. This much we could determine independently: Something was going on with the CEO of Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment. The question was: What?
And the question got a little more or a little less complicated when Elliotte Friedman of Hockey Night in Canada tweeted something about Leiweke leaving MLSE. What followed was the usual panic/denial/more panic/issue public denial that follows Tuesday’s headline-chasing.
