TORONTO - Time for the commandant and his captain to discuss strategy, logistics and morale.

After confirming in the spring he would not strip Dion Phaneuf of his “C” when the Maple Leafs dressing room soured, Brendan Shanahan is soon to have his one-on-one talk with Phaneuf to see how he might become a more effective leader and the Leafs a better team.

“We’ve scheduled some time to spend together,” said the team president at Thursday’s unveiling of the Legends Row statue at the Air Canada Centre. “I think he’s out catching me some lobsters (at Phaneuf’s off-season home in P.E.I.) right now.”

A change in the leadership group seemed imminent when MLSE president Tim Leiweke first introduced Shanahan. If not big personnel moves, then some new roles would be assigned after all agreed the late-season collapse sprung from a poor team dynamic. But Dave Nonis and Randy Carlyle remained as general manager and coach, respectively, while Shanahan gave Phaneuf a vote of confidence.
