TORONTO - If they build it, will the NHL come?

Tim Leiweke thinks so.

During a speech to the Toronto Region Board of Trade on Wednesday, the president of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment noted that revisions being done to BMO Field on the Exhibition Grounds will expand the stadium’s capacity to 40,000, which would seem to make it a legitimate venue to hold a Winter Classic.

“Gary knows about it and has been supportive,” Leiweke said, referring to NHL commissioner Gary Bettman.

Prior to the Leafs-Wings Winter Classic at Michigan Stadium back on Jan. 1, NHL chief operating officer John Collins told the Toronto Sun that such a marriage would be “intriguing” for the Maple Leafs’ 100th anniversary celebrations, which will take place during the 2016-17 season.

“Venue — or lack of one — has always been the main issue with Toronto hosting one of these games,” Collins said at the time.
