TORONTO - Tim Leiweke wants it all.

The World Cup of Hockey. The NHL all-star game. The Winter Classic. The NHL draft.

Because, in his opinion, Toronto has earned the right to host those events

And he’ll tell anyone who is listening, whether they care to hear it or not.

In the mind of the confident, at-times brash president of Maple Leafs Sports & Entertainment Ltd., Toronto deserves all those things. In fact, listening to his speech the Toronto Region Board of Trade on Wednesday, you get the impression he feels the city has been slighted by often being overlooked to host many of these events, especially the Winter Classic.

“Why there hasn’t been a Winter Classic in Canada is, in my opinion, a mistake and shows a lack of respect to this city...” Leiweke said.

In confirming his attempts to woo all these events to Toronto, Leiweke followed by perhaps making the boldest statement of many bold statements: The NHL would reach unparalleled heights if and when the Leafs compete for — and, in his mind, hopefully win — a Stanley Cup.
