TORONTO - Dave Nonis confirms it: The Maple Leafs have chatted to teams above them about moving up in the upcoming draft, being held June 27-28.

“There are some players we rank higher and have interest in,” the Leafs general manager said Tuesday.

During the recent NHL combine, the Leafs interviewed both forward Sam Bennett and defenceman Aaron Ekblad, who are slated to go in the top three.

Toronto picks eighth.

Florida GM Dale Tallon has said he is willing to deal the No. 1 pick.

“It’s a deep draft — that’s why you have four teams at the top open to trading down,” Nonis said.
