TORONTO - How could Randy Carlyle have been rehired?

After the Leafs lost 12 of their last 14 in crunch time. With such a wonky team dynamic. With that awful team defence and penalty- killing. And after everything Maple Leaf Sports and Entertainment president Tim Leiweke said he didn’t like about the image the team projected.

It appears that, given the chance to explain his case during the organizational meetings in Las Vegas, the positive points Carlyle tried to extoll at season’s end had some sway with the bosses. And if new team president Brendan Shanahan prefers for now to prune the hedges of assistant coaches instead of axing the big trees, then Carlyle gets a chance to make things right. Certainly, that’s the counsel that patient general manager Dave Nonis would have offered Shanahan, before telling the media that Carlyle was still capable of repeating his 48-game success in 2013.
