Dave Bolland’s return from the severe laceration near his ankle has not gone near as smoothly as the Leafs would have hoped.

The gritty centre missed Monday’s practice here, though the team is hopeful he will be in the lineup for Tuesday’s date with the Lightning. The difficulty, according to coach Randy Carlyle, has been that Bolland continues to aggravate the injury — often in the middle of games — which puts him out of commission for long stretches.

“With Bolland, we’ve been taxed from the standpoint that he hasn’t had the opportunity to play a lot of minutes and we didn’t envision that,” Carlyle said. “We thought that when a player comes back, the first couple of games he gets 10 minutes and then (you expect it to increase.)

"What's happened is he has aggravated it and it has bothered him. He’s not hurting himself. It’s just (with his) pain threshold he rolls his ankle and sometimes it takes up to 10 minutes to come back."
