If fans have been frustrated with Cody Franson’s play at times this season, the Maple Leafs defenceman understands.

“It has been okay,” Franson said. “I would say the year has been average. I have not quite hit the numbers I was hoping to hit.

“My plus-minus is nowhere near where I was trying to get it, but sometimes that happens. There are a lot of different factors that come into that stat and you try not to put too much emphasis on it.”

Still, that Franson was minus-18 heading into Saturday’s game against the Winnipeg Jets bothered him. And he knows that defensively, there has not been much to draw from in a positive sense.

He led Leafs defencemen with 33 points, but that has been window dressing on a club that has struggled behind its blue line since opening night in October.

Why the difficult year? A contract dispute meant Franson missed training camp and most of the Leafs’ pre-season schedule.
