TORONTO - As much as some bitter fans would like to see him do it, Randy Carlyle isn’t going to emerge behind the Maple Leafs bench with a bag over his head like then-owner Harold Ballard wanted Roger Neilson to do back in 1979.

Neilson refused to do it 35 years ago. And Carlyle’s not about to wear a disguise either.

With both the head coach and his team being pelted with criticism in the midst of a seven-game losing funk heading into Saturday’s huge showdown against the Red Wings at the Air Canada Centre, Carlyle refuses to hide from his bashers, both at and away from the rink.

Asked if he has noticed the public backlash of late, Carlyle acknowledged that it has come to his attention. And he’s not going to back away from it either.

“I would say no but some of it is forced on you,” Carlyle said of the venomous chatter making the rounds. “What do you do?
