TORONTO - When word leaked via social media that Dion Phaneuf did not come out to address the media after the Maple Leafs’ 5-3 loss to the St. Louis Blues on Tuesday, one sharp-witted observer replied via Twitter: “Well, he didn’t show up for the game either.”

If only it was that simple.

Truth be told, Phaneuf arguably had his worst game as a Maple Leaf all season, if not his career in blue and white. From making bad decisions to whiffing on clearing attempts to getting shoved around by smaller players, the Leafs’ No. 3 finished the night getting jeered by the home fans almost every time he touched the puck.

To be fair, he did explain himself on Wednesday after calling in to Sportsnet The Fan 590. At least he took it on himself to be accountable, albeit 24 hours too late in the minds of some observers.
