TORONTO - The funniest thing on television these days? It’s not Family Guy or reruns of McHale’s Navy. It’s listening to people continually yammer on about Maple Leafs coach Randy Carlyle supposedly throwing his goaltender under the bus.

After a 3-2 loss in Detroit to the Red Wings on March 18, Carlyle was asked what he thought of the play of his goaltender, and the coach replied: “James Reimer? I thought he was OK, you know. Just OK.”

Since then, Reimer’s play has been a notch below “OK”, and Carlyle has been vilified for destroying his goaltender’s confidence.

You see, this is what I don’t get: Professional athletes are put on a pedestal because they’re professional athletes. They make big money and they’re supposed to be able to deflect criticism to some degree.
