Moments after those inside the world’s self-proclaimed most famous arena had witnessed the latest example of JVR’s shinny magicon Wednesday night, a New York Rangers player skating past the players benches was overhead asking: “What the (bleep) was that?”

The answer to that question is simple. It was, in fact, just another display of the climb to stardom being made by James van Riemsdyk in this, his breakout season.

Just seconds earlier, van Riemsdyk, speeding down the right wing, had flipped the puck over the head of New York’s Ryan McDonagh, arguably the Rangers’ top blueliner, then whizzed past the outstanding defenceman to, in essence, gobble up his own pass. His subsequent deke of goalie Henrik Lundqvist just barely failed to find the back of the net, but that likely won’t stop the highlight-reel solo effort from being replayed over and over again.

At least that’s the opinion of Dave Poulin, the Maple Leafs’ director of hockey operations.
