Live by the kids, die by the kids.

Admittedly, Randy Carlyle had hoped his players learned the merits of smothering defence after watching the Canadian Olympic team go unbeaten en route to the gold in Sochi.

But when you have two young bluelinerss on your back end like Morgan Rielly and Jake Gardiner, inexperience equals mistakes. It’s part of the process.

On a night of horrible giveaways, Gardiner and Rielly were the poster children for all that ailed the Leafs in a crushing 5-4 overtime loss on Long Island on Thursday.

On the offensive side, an aspect of the sport in which both these talented youngsters usually shine, Gardiner and Rielly were each held pointless despite the fact their team beat Isles goalie Evgeni Nabokov four times.
