PHOENIX - Did someone ask for secondary scoring on the Maple Leafs? Yes.

Were they thinking Carl Gunnarsson? No.

About to mark a full calendar year without a goal, the Swedish stay-at-home defender had a chance to move up during a delayed penalty in the second period of Monday’s game against the Phoenix Coyotes. Parked in the corner out of goalie Mike Smith’s view, an errant Dion Phaneuf shot was coming right at him, but he calmly knocked it down and worked his way unhindered to the slot for a goal.

“You never want to have a zero in that column,” laughed Gunnarsson, who leaves Colton Orr, Carter Ashton, Tim Gleason and frequent scratch Mark Fraser with nil. “I haven’t done anything like that before on a goal, so for that matter, it was unique.”
