Joffrey Lupul might have picked the wrong game to deliver a hard cross-check to the head of Detroit’s Patrick Eaves.
It’s expected the NHL will take a look at the Leafs winger’s hit on Eaves, which knocked him out of the Winter Classic in front of a six-figure crowd and a global TV audience.
Lupul was suspended for two games last season for a head shot on Victor Hedman of the Tampa Bay Lightning. Eaves was down on one knee and looking away in a corner scrum in the first period when Lupul turned and applied his stick towards his face and neck,
“I don’t know,” Lupul said of him possibly getting a call from Brendan Shanahan in the league office. “I felt bad. I went to cross-check him in the arm and it kind of hit off him (upwards). I haven’t seen the clip. It was certainly an accident.”
