DETROIT - The Red Baron can still fly.

The oldest skater in Tuesday’s Alumni Showdown was Red Berenson, 74-year-old Original Sixer and long-time coach at the University of Michigan.

In the final seconds of the first game, Berenson was put in charge of the huddle by the Red Wings during a timeout to thwart the Maple Leafs’ 6-on-5 and preserve a one-goal win. Legendary Scotty Bowman gave Berenson, his old St. Louis Blues charge, the okay.

“Maybe because they know my head is into this, I do this every day,” Berenson said. “I played for Scotty a long time and it feels good to have a coach’s confidence. (The play) was old-time hockey, I’m going to tie up the other centre (Toronto’s Dave McLlwain) and Jiri Fischer gets it out.”

More than 40 years ago, Berenson scored six goals on Doug Favell when the goaltender played in Philadelphia. On Tuesday, they met again.
