ANN ARBOR, MICH. - If plans to expand Toronto’s BMO Field ever come to fruition, would an NHL outdoor game follow closely behind?

NHL chief operating officer John Collins admits such a marriage would be “intriguing” for the Maple Leafs’ 100th anniversary celebrations, which will take place during the 2016-17 season.

“Venue — or lack of one — has always been the main issue with Toronto hosting one of these games,” Collins said on Monday.

“If we could open the Rogers Centre roof in winter like we have the option to do at B.C. Place for the Ottawa Senators-Vancouver Canucks Heritage Classic game later this season, that would be ideal. But we don’t.”

Collins admits that Leafs fans are deserving of seeing their city host such an event. But the word that the league continuously uses in relation to these games is a “spectacle” — and for it to be one, you need an appropriate facility to host it.
