What do the Maple Leafs and Mayor Rob Ford have in common these days?

Both represent large ‘Nations,’ both have been labelled ‘embarrassing’ and both are trying to hold on until Christmas, after which some time off and holiday cheer might soften their critics.

Ford and city council are about to wrap up a tumultuous season, but the Leafs have much unfinished business. On Thursday, just before the start of the National Hockey League holiday roster freeze, the Leafs meet the visiting Phoenix Coyotes. If that game unfolds anything like Tuesday’s no-show against the Florida Panthers, the Leafs will be Scrooged by their own supporters. Folks are fed up with 10 losses in the past 13 games, which has wasted almost all the potential playoff points Toronto banked in October.
