To Joffrey Lupul, looking at the Eastern Conference standings and where the Leafs fit in the playoff race right now is a waste of time.

Smart man.

It is early yet, but given the market and current form of the team, it can’t be helped, a fact of which the winger is no doubt well aware.

But in Lupul’s view, so what if the recent 13 losses in 19 games streak has allowed four Eastern Conference teams to crawl to within four points of the Leafs?

So what if the team suddenly has a rather tenuous hold on the final wild-card spot? If they keep playing the way they have on most nights over the past month, Lupul reasons, what difference will it make?

“We’re a long way from the playoffs and honestly, if we want to do anything in the playoffs, we’re gonna have to play a lot better,” Lupul said on Friday following an off-ice meeting to dissect the goriness of a 6-3 loss to the Blues the previous night in St. Louis.
