Nazem Kadri admits being a bit surprised at being slapped with a three-game suspension for pancaking Minnesota Wild goalie Niklas Backstrom.

Speaking publicly Friday afternoon for the first time since NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan handed down his supplementary discipline to the Maple Leafs forward, Kadri wanted to send his best wishes to Backstrom.

“You never want to see that happen to anyone,” Kadri said. “I hope he’ll be OK.”

Asked if he was caught off-guard by the severity of the punishment, Kadri replied: “A little bit. Obviously it’s disappointing to miss some time, especially because it’s kind of out of my character to do something like that. I haven’t been involved in anything like that before.

“Just kind of a funny play where I ended up on the wrong end of it. It’s definitely disappointing.”
