TORONTO - David Clarkson can breathe a sigh of relief.

The Maple Leafs not only survived without him, they did so at a .700 clip.

It’s a best-case scenario for Clarkson, who won’t feel the need to overstep his boundaries when he makes his Leafs debut in Columbus against the Blue Jackets on Friday night.

“Its easy when you have been suspended to come back in the lineup and try to overdo things,” Clarkson said on Wednesday. “I have to take it step by step, but play like I was brought here to do — that’s go around the net, put the puck in the net, be physical, good in my own zone. Not try to do too much, just try to play the way I have my whole career, and that’s it.”

Clarkson’s 10-game suspension for leaving the bench to join a brawl against the Buffalo Sabres is done, but where the 29-year-old right winger fits into coach Randy Carlyle’s lineup remains to be seen.
