The Maple Leafs displayed the sweaters they’ll wear at the outdoor Winter Classic and, at times, Saturday’s game against the Oilers certainly had elements of pond hockey.

The Maple Leafs, drilled in defensive logistics by coach Randy Carlyle, strayed from their script, while Edmonton’s offensive oriented team has had a long struggle trying to play a 200-foot game with physicality.

Ex-Marlie coach Dallas Eakins is the latest man charged with finding that balance.

The visitors from Alberta combined enough of both on Saturday to scare Jonathan Bernier and the Atlantic Division-leading Leafs, but Dave Bolland’s 6-5 winner salvaged Toronto’s hot start.

Bolland finished off a 3-on-1 with Cody Franson and Mason Raymond at 2:09 of the extra period as the Leafs improved to 5-1.
