MONTREAL - Phil Kessel has made it clear all summer that he doesn’t want to negotiate a contract extension during the regular season.

He may not have to.

Multiple reports Monday night suggest that the Leafs and the Kessel camp are in negotiations for a multi-year extension.

Kessel has made it clear that he wants to remain a Maple Leaf and it didn’t hurt that his good friend and roommate Tyler Bozak signed a lengthy extension in the summer.

Kessel, who is eligible to be an unrestricted free agent in the summer, is believed to be seeking a deal in the $8-million range. Whether puck drop on Tuesday is an actual deadline or artificial remains to be seen.

But the fact that the two sides are talking is a significant development given the potential distraction as the season moves along.
