John-Michael Liles had an idea it was coming.
The veteran defenceman was one of several Leafs placed on waivers on Sunday at noon.
“There hasn’t been a camp in my NHL career where your position is set in stone,” Liles said after the Leafs won their final pre-season game, 3-1 against the visiting Detroit Red Wings on Saturday night.
“It just makes it even tougher when you’ve got kids pushing you. We’ve got some great young blueliners in this organization and they should be proud of the game they’ve had.”
Liles, 32, carries a salary-cap hit of $3.875-million US. The Leafs will save $925,000 against the cap if he clears, which it is expected he will.
The Leafs also placed goalie Drew MacIntyre, defencemen T.J. Brennan and Korbinian Holzer, and forwards Trevor Smith and Troy Bodie on waivers.
