James van Riemsdyk has never scored more than 21 goals in a season, never accounted for more than 40 points — and all that is about to change.

Or, at least, it should.

This should be the breakout season for van Riemsdyk — at least 30 goals, maybe 60-plus points — the kind of numbers representative of a No. 2 pick in the NHL draft.

He is still only 24 years old. The Flyers tired of waiting for him to find a level of consistency.

But this is Year 2 in Toronto, a full 82-game season, Year 5 in his NHL career, coming off a point-a-game playoff: The is the time when young talent needs to take the next step in player development.
