TORONTO - David Clarkson was signed by the Maple Leafs to provide leadership, toughness and goal scoring.

But it's hard to do that when you're sitting in a press box.

Clarkson received a 10-game suspension for jumping over the boards and joining the brawl on Sunday night at the Air Canada Centre against the Buffalo Sabres.

And he deserves to be suspended. There's no justifying his actions. It was a totally dumb and selfish thing to do. Clarkson was brought in to be a team leader. But he blew it on Sunday night.

Clearly the Mimico native wanted to send a message to his new teammates when he jumped over the boards in defence of Phil Kessel. He wanted to show them that he's got their back. But there's a time and place for that, and jumping over the boards was the absolute wrong thing to do.

Let's be real. Watch the tape.
