To this day, former NHL referee Kerry Fraser still has to answer for the missed Wayne Gretzky high-sticking call on Maple Leafs' Doug Gilmour during Game 6 of the 1993 Campbell Conference final against the Kings. The Leafs went on to lose the series in seven games. (QMI Agency)

Two decades after The High Stick, they will not let Kerry Fraser forget about the self-proclaimed “worst mistake” of his illustrious officiating career.

Even those who were not even alive yet to see it.

In recent years, the former NHL referee with the trademark well-coiffed weave admits being in a number of minor hockey rinks when he has been approached by a kid.

“Hey, you’re the guy who missed the Gretzky high stick on Gilmour,” a boy has told him on more than one occasion.

“When I ask him when he was born, he’ll say something like 2004,” Fraser explained with a chuckle on Sunday. “I’ll respond by saying: “Hey, you weren’t even born yet when that happened.”

“I guess that’s the way it works now. That play obviously is being passed down from generation to generation. Obviously it has become part of hockey folklore.”

The lesson here: Maple Leafs fans have long memories.
