Roster overhaul for Leafs not necessary

TORONTO - On a late May day 20 years ago, Cliff Fletcher invited the media to his Gardens office to commiserate about losing Game 7 to the Los Angeles Kings the night before.

Win, and the Maple Leafs and their general manager would have been off to the Stanley Cup final, their first since 1967, a dream date with the Montreal Canadiens. Wayne Gretzky and the Kings had other plans.

“One of the toughest things is you don’t know when you’ll get another chance like this,” Fletcher lamented that morning of mourning.

With the full weight of the Causeway St. Collapse on his mind Tuesday, current GM Dave Nonis must have suffered the same pangs of regret. Not because the Cup was in sight, but there was at least a shot at making the conference final on the line for his burgeoning young team.
