Although Leafs captain Dion Phaneuf won't be getting any games off to rest now that Toronto has secured a place in the playoffs, coach Randy Carlyle said he would like to see the defenceman's ice time reduced to around 23 minutes from a season average of 25-plus. (Dave Abel/Toronto Sun)

TORONTO - Don’t expect to see your favourite Maple Leafs sitting in the press box in the coming days, playoff spot or not.

Coach Randy Carlyle said he has no plans to make veterans a healthy scratch simply to rest them for the playoffs.

“Until the games mean nothing, then I think we will play the best lineup night in, night out,” Carlyle said on Tuesday.

“We’re not going with anything other than the attitude that they have to perform. They’ve had lots of ample rest over the last little while.”

But some, including captain Dion Phaneuf, could see their ice time chopped. Phaneuf is averaging 25 minutes 24 seconds a game this season.

“We would like to see him stay around the 22-23 minute mark,” Carlyle said. “At times, we would like to scale it back. If we are desperate for the points, we are going to play our people.”
