A victory over the New York Islanders on Thursday won’t necessarily guarantee the Maple Leafs a playoff spot.

But it certainly will bring them a lot closer.

Will this provide another chapter in a Leafs-Islanders rivalry that, to the surprise of many, has provided some rich, some unique and, at times, some bizarre, incidents? Only time will tell.

In the meantime, here is a look at five memorable moments of Leafs-Isles clashes of the past.

1. Lanny’s goal (1978)

For many Leafs fans who were kids in the 1970s, this remains the biggest goal in Maple Leafs history. Even Doug Gilmour’s overtime wraparound marker against Blues goalie Curtis Joseph in 1993 doesn’t usurp it.
