TORONTO - It ain’t going to happen, for any number of reasons.

But there’s a case to be made for the NHL general manager of the year award going to a guy who doesn’t even have a job.

Well, he has a job, but not as a GM.

The Maple Leafs are one of the most improved teams this season, and it’s a team put together by Brian Burke.

Last year, Toronto finished the season 35-37-10, and were a minus-33 in the goals scored/goals against category, second worst in the Eastern Conference. They failed to make the playoffs for the seventh straight season.

With 2-0 victory over the New Jersey Devils on Monday night, courtesy of a 32-save performance by goaltender James Reimer, the Leafs are 24-13-5, and 17 goals on the plus side.

The Leafs and their fans can smell the playoffs, and you have to give credit where credit is due.
