The Leafs look likely to make the playoffs and equally likely to face one of two Original Six opponents, the Canadiens or Bruins. Rob Longley says it would be wrong to write off the Leafs against either in a seven-game series. (Getty)

If and when it comes time to handicap the Leafs’ prospects against their first-round opponent in the Stanley Cup playoffs, what you conclude on paper will only tell part of the story.

The opposition — whether it be the Montreal Canadiens or Boston Bruins, the two most likely candidates — may look stronger in goal or have more depth at a given position. They may have better stats and in the Bruins’ case, anyway, a more-recent history of playoff success.

But dismissing the Leafs’ chances in a seven-game series on any of those grounds would be ignoring one key point with this team: Right now, they fear no opponent in the Eastern Conference.
