Joffrey Lupul has become the most indispensable player on the Maple Leafs — the captain without the C — so it is imperative that the team handles his current health issue, be it a concussion or something else, with the utmost caution. (Reuters)

This is a hold-your-breath time for the Maple Leafs, trying to come grips with what is wrong with their most indispensable player, Joffrey Lupul.

They say he doesn’t have a concussion. They say he isn’t having headaches. They are worried about a possible whiplash and stiffness of the neck. The problem often for teams is distinguishing the difference between the symptoms of whiplash and those of concussion.

And then doing what is right for today and tomorrow.

Lupul has become the emotional leader of the Leafs, the captain without a C. In the eight healthy games he has played this season, the Leafs have lost just once in regulation time. In the 10 games he has been part of — although he played just over 10 minutes combined in two of them — he has scored eight goals, set up six others, essentially 14 points in eight and a half games played.
