Maple Leafs fans apparently can expect a few different wrinkles in the lineup Saturday night in New Jersey.

Just five Leafs — goalie Ben Scrivens, defencemen Ryan O’Byrne and Mike Kostka and forwards Matt Frattin and Ryan Hamilton — were on the ice at the Prudential Center for an optional morning skate.

If those skaters indeed are scratched against the Devils, it means that defenceman Jake Gardiner and centre Joe Colborne will play.

Scrivens, of course, would back up James Reimer.

It’s also expected that wingers Clarke MacArthur and Leo Komarov will return from injury.

Coach Randy Carlyle was not available for interviews on Saturday morning.

Gardiner has been a healthy scratch for the past three games after playing in five following his recall from the Toronto Marlies. If he plays, it means Carlyle is confident that Gardiner will overcome the defensive deficiencies that have kept him out of the lineup.
