To quote a recently departed Maple Leafs’ exec: “We (GMs) make more mistakes at the trade deadline than any other day of the year.”

Current club commissar Dave Nonis is under no such suicide watch. He’s definitely not under delusion his team’s on the verge of a Cup and must risk the farm for a veteran or two by 3 p.m. Wednesday. There are too many scars from previous administrations erring on that point.

But neither have the Leafs magically cured their depth deficiency just because they hold down the sixth seed heading to the finish line. Why not try extending your first foray in eight years into the merry, merry month of May as long as you can? That’s why Nonis had his cell nearly grafted to his ear at the MasterCard Centre on Tuesday, as the Leafs practised below.
