The meetings have begun: Dave Nonis with Claude Loiselle and Dave Poulin. Nonis and assistants with the coaching staff of the Maple Leafs. Nonis with his pro scouting director, Steve Kasper, and with hockey development people Jimmy Hughes, Reid Mitchell and Steve Staios. Nonis with just about anybody who has a say in what the Maple Leafs are doing.

“And If we need to call our pro scouts, Mike Penny or Rob Cowie, we can do that too if we have to,” said Nonis.

He is talking about what everyone seems to be talking about as April is about to begin. The NHL trade deadline comes on Wednesday, his first as general manager of the Leafs, and maybe more importantly, his first with the Leafs in a position as a playoff team.

That still is spoken in hold-your-breath tones. It has been that long between dances. “We don’t know where we’re going to finish,” said Nonis. “We don’t even know what place we’ll be in by Wednesday.”
