TORONTO - Those of us who still subscribe to Sports Illustrated — despite the fact that it cover hockey just slightly better than five-pin bowling — were drawn to the recent Faces in the Crowd column.
None other than Amanda Kessel — Phil’s younger sister, a prodigious goal-scorer for the University of Minnesota — was featured in the weekly bit, the result of her seven points in a two-game sweep over Minnesota State and reaching the 200-career point mark.
Unfortunately for Leafs fans, her brother has also become a face in the crowd this season. The team’s top sniper certainly hasn’t done anything to rise above the crowd, at least not on the scoreboard, though he leads the Leafs with 24 shots on goal.
Kessel, who tallied a team-leading 37 goals in 2011-12, has two points and zero goals in the team’s first five games and is 11th overall in team scoring.
