TORONTO - Chris Hadfield and Sabres goalie Ryan Miller both opened the Maple Leafs season in near-zero gravity.
Hadfield was a few hundred kilometres above the earth in the International Space Station “dropping” the ceremonial puck, while at ice level, the Buffalo Sabres goalie added another notch in his successful career against Toronto.
Miller had lots of help as the Sabres resumed their torment of Toronto, disrupted by the NHL lockout.
Miller stopped 34 shots in the 2-1 win as the Leafs were dealt a much tougher hand than Saturday’s modest one-goal win in Montreal. They didn’t beat their Buffalo nemesis until Nazem Kadri’s power-play goal at 18:18 of the third with Ben Scrivens pulled. A Joffrey Lupul goal was disallowed moments later for being directed in with a hand.
