TORONTO - The volume has been turned down.
There’s a new Toronto Maple Leafs general manager in town.
Dave Nonis is speaking in the morning, and there is little bravado in his voice, very little noise and few combative words.
The emotional whirlwind of the past 30 hours has been not been lost on him, as unsettling and uplifting, as engaging and disappointing as it’s all been.
“This wasn’t how I envisioned getting my next general manager’s job,” he said at the beginning of a long, wide-ranging conversation.
But the job and a new three-year contract are his.
Nonis will be taking up full-time residence in Toronto, something he has never done before.
His wife and teenage son live in New Hampshire.
They won’t be moving here.
His house in Vancouver is up for sale.
He called Steve Yzerman to find out what it’s like to have your family in one city and your job in another.
“He told me it works for him,” said Nonis. “He said it would work for me.”
