Maple Leafs sign Holzer

James van Riemsdyk excited to play centre for Leafs

TORONTO - The Maple Leafs on Monday night announced they have signed defenceman Korbinian Holzer, adding another body to a blueline that the organization feels has depth.

The Holzer signing gives the Leafs six defencemen, including captain Dion Phaneuf, Mike Komisarek, John-Michael Liles, Carl Gunnarsson and Jake Gardiner, under contract.

Holzer’s deal is for one year and believed to be a one-way pact, which means the Leafs fully expect him to win a spot, left open when Luke Schenn was traded to the Philadelphia Flyers, in training camp.

With the Toronto Marlies last season, Holzer had one goal and 19 assists in 67 games.

The Leafs, meanwhile, have filed for arbitration with winger Nikolai Kulemin, but not with another restricted free agent, defenceman Cody Franson.

Neither player is close to signing a new deal.

Do you think the officiating has been fair in the Kings-Sharks series?
